The non-cylindrical clutch wedge (sprag) creates a sliding/ dragging action that concentrates wear on a small surface area during normal operation (free-wheeling), seriously affecting backstop performance, life and reliability.

Wedge design can lead to dimensional variations that can result in failure under typical operating stresses.

Cylindrical rollers and wedge action provide a safe, door-stop type action - the higher the torque, the tighter the stop.
