Problem Solver

A fertilizer producer was experiencing problems with three, top-entry agitated preneutralizers, mixing a phosphoric acid and ammonia slurry The slurry is very thick, with a specific gravity of 1.5 to 1.6, with process upsets (even relatively minor ones) which can cause the material to thicken or harden. The agitator shafts were bending and the high resulting loads were damaging the thrust couplings, drives and motors.

The repairs were expensive, inconvenient and often resulted in costly plant downtime one quality-control problems.

The local Rexnord distributor pointed out that the installation of bottom bearings, within the agitators, would eliminate the bending moment the paddle shafts would encounter. Furthermore, a properly selected Falk fluid coupling would protect the other drive components from the overloads when an upset did occur The distributor salesman also suggested using the optional thermal trip plugs and switches to prevent the couplings, oil fill from contaminating the slurry, should an extended overload occur.

Current Problems

Process upsets were damaging drive components through high overloads.

Vibratory loads upon start-up, even under normal conditions, cause drive fatigue.

After a process upset, the drive motor lacks the capability to restart the agitator.

The True Torque Solution

The Falk fluid coupling overload protection is achieved by a change in oil flow which spreads the impact over a period of time, relieving stress on the components.

A coupling which transmits power through a liquid will dampen vibrations.

The Falk fluid coupling will allow the same motor to start a higher load, by simply adding more fluid.

Implementation

The customer purchased three True Torque fluid couplings with thermal trip plugs and switches, and installed bottom bearings in the problem agitators. When the drives were put into production the customer was pleased with the controlled, smooth acceleration the Falk fluid coupling provided.

In this facility the improved system is performing satisfactorily, and agitator failures and the resulting production outages have been avoided. Operations are now running smoothly, production is higher and product quality has improved.
