PROBLEM-SOLVER, Series 5
A mile high, western rendering plant
was expanding and had purchased
two used centrifuges at a very
reasonable price. The drive motors
were not included in the package.
The previous owners had used
special, high starting capability
motors on these centrifuges. The
manufacturer was called and they
suggested doubling the motor
horsepower, if the customer didn't
want to use special motors. This
created a problem since the starters
were already wired for the smaller
motors.

A local Rexnord distributor was called for a quote on the oversized motors and starters.
After the customer explained his quandary, our distributor suggested using
Falk-Sime fluid couplings with the correctly sized NEMA B design
motors.
The distributor checked with the
local Falk district sales office on the
fluid coupling selections and the
correctly sized motors and fluid
couplings were at the customer's
plant within two hours.
Current Problems
The high starting requirements of
the centrifuge were greater than
a standard NEMA B motor's
capabilities.
Special or oversized modified
standard
motors are expensive and
require long lead times.
V-belt drives don't last long when
subjected to repeatedly high
slippage starts.
High current draw, at start up, adds
to the plants peak demand rate
billing.
The True Torque Solution
The fluid coupling allows
the use of the motor's breakdown
torque to start the high inertia
machine.
The fluid coupling will
allow use of standard NEMA B
motors, properly sized for the
running load, NOT the starting
requirements.
Fluid couplings limit the
starting torque that the drive belts
see. A controlled, smooth acceleration
assures long component life.
With the use of a fluid
coupling, the high current dwell
time is much less, saving money.
Implementation
Two True Torque fluid couplings were
installed with the proper sized NEMA B design motors. The fluid
couplings allow the motor to
accelerate to 90% base speed
under a reduced load, dramatically
limiting current draw. Since the fluid
coupling develops torque gradually,
the V-belt drive is spared from high
starting torques that can cause it
to slip.
In addition to the extended start, the
customer also benefits from:
-Torsional system dampening.
-Overload protection.
-Local inventory.
-Local factory assistance, if
needed.
