A major porcelain producer in Colorado was experiencing problems with dry-Shot couplings
which were being used on several batch-type ball mills.
Under frequent starting conditions, the steel shot begins to break down rapidly with
a corresponding change in output torque characteristics. It also causes an imbalance condition
which causes premature failure of the connecting pinion-shaft and bearings. On periodic overloads,
the shot-type coupling offers little overload protection which led to motor failure.
These problems were expensive to the Customer in both maintenance costs and lost production.
A local industrial distributor was called upon to help solve these nagging problems.
They happened to be an authorized Rexnord distributor who had a better idea!
Current Problems
As the mill was being filled, the jogging cycle leads to rapid deterioration of the shot charge.
The maintenance interval for the shot coupling is very short — both to
redistribute the charge or to change it.
The existing shot-type coupling offers poor overload protection.
The drive motor must be moved to replace the coupling when it fails.
The shot coupling offers virtually no torsional flexibility.
The True Torque Solution
BY using an authentic fluid coupling, the oil fill will provide stable output torque
characteristics under repeated jogging cycles.
The True Torque fluid coupling's oil fill should be checked twice a year under normal conditions.
Its fill will never cause an imbalanced condition.
Falk's unique baffling system limits stall torque to less than 300% on any jammed condition.
The Falk fluid coupling, with its gear coupling mounting, mounts like a spacer coupling.
Motors do not have to be moved or realigned if maintenance is ever required on the fluid coupling.
By transmitting torque through a fluid, the system vibration and running shock is reduced.
Implementation
The Rexnord distributor selected a soft start package for three different sized ball mills utilizing the same size fluid coupling.
They were there, assisting the plant personnel on installation and startup, and didn't go home until each drive was running
to the customer's full satisfaction.
Since the installation of the True Torque fluid couplings, the maintenance and downtime costs have been drastically reduced.
The customer is satisfied that his money was well spent for a quality product, backed up by competent people who care.
