Problem-Solver, Series 2
A
large cement plant in Southeastern Ohio was experiencing profit
loss due to a troublesome Dual Drive Screw Conveyor.
The two screws are center
connected using a rigidly bolted
connecting sleeve. As the drive
motors are across-the-line started,
the constant high starting shock
would shear bolts and elongate the
bolt holes in the connecting sleeve
causing the conveyor to become
plugged. Numerous man-hours
were then consumed unplugging
the conveyor and installing new
connecting sleeve bolts.
A Falk Distributor was asked
for their recommendations, and
they analyzed the situation this
way:
Current Problems
The drive motors are inducing high starting shock loads.
The motors are fighting each other for their share of the load.
During a jam, the motors cause drive component failure.
Numerous starts under full load cause abnormal heat build-up reducing motor life.
The True Torque Solution
The fluid couplings "tamed" the motors' excessive starting
capabilities and matched them to the drive requirements.
Fluid couplings are easily balanced
so each motor can equally share
the total load.
In the event of an extended overload,
a fluid coupling will protect
the driven equipment.
A fluid coupling allows a motor
to start virtually under no load,
thereby, increasing its useful life.
Implementation
The Rexnord Distributor engineered
a dual drive fluid coupling
package to solve this User's
problems. Since the installation of
their Rexnord fluid couplings, the
customer has not experienced any
downtime with this piece of
equipment. This installation has
made this User a firm believer in
the benefits of using Rexnord fluid couplings.
