Problem-Solver, Series 12

A power plant serving the electrical needs of Northeastern Utah was using Twin Disc fluid couplings to help start two of its clinker grinders.
Since this is a coal-fired power plant, ash is generated in large quantities. The ash falls to the bottom of the boiler in large chunks having the consistency of sandstone.
The grinders reduce these "clinkers" so they can be placed into a slurry and piped from the plant.
Boiler operators often test the upper portions of each boiler by attempting to pierce it with tools or what is described as "spears".
These spears will break off, fall into the clinker grinders causing sudden jams.
When the grinders jam under full power, the drives and motors were being severely damaged causing the shut-down of the affected boiler.
On one such occasion a Rexnord stocking distributor was called for help.
The distributor salesman noted the selection parameters and informed his customer that, "he was on the way with the solution to this problem."
Before leaving on the 170 mile trip up to the power plant, the salesman placed a
Rexnord 235HFN-10 fluid coupling in his car.
Once at the power plant, the Rexnord distributor discussed the problems with the maintenance personnel.
Current Problems
Due to their construction, Twin Disc couplings produce very high stall torques. They are typically very "hard couplings", as they do not use internal oil baffles to cushion stalls.
After the initial high shock load was transmitted, the Twin Disc coupling began slipping, rapidly overheating until the oil seals blew out of the casing, requiring a total rebuild.
The customer needed to get his boiler back "on-line" as soon as possible and couldn't handle extended down-time to rework the drive system.
The True Torque Solution
The True Torque's construction includes a unique oil baffling system which
inhibits oil flow during start-up and jams. This is the reason True Torque couplings are soft.
True Torque fluid couplings have as standard, fusible plugs which will discharge the oil when the oil temperature rises above their range.
This will protect all drive components.
Since the True Torque coupling is a "drop-in" replacement for the competitor's coupling, no modifications to the drive system are required.
Implementation
The maintenance personnel insisted the distributor leave the 235HFN-10 coupling with them and wrote a requisition on-the-spot, to have purchasing issue him a purchase order.
The True Torque fluid coupling was installed and put into service the same day. Since its installation, numerous spears and various tools have been ingested by the grinders with no major damage.
The User is pleased with the performance of the True Torque fluid coupling and the professionalism of their
Rexnord stocking distributor.
