One of the largest manufacturers in the country of wound wire cables for automotive and industrial use, produces products which range from fine spark plug
wire to heavy gauge battery jumper cables. All of these products are made up of multiple strands of wire wound together to form cables.
This winding process employs machines that pull wires from multiple rolls and twists them into a single cable.
These machines must have a soft start to avoid stretching and breaking the individual weak wire strands.

These high production machines were originally equipped with shot-type sheave couplings, however, they were a continuous maintenance problem.
Finally, the maintenance supervisor called a Rexnord distributor for assistance in solving his production problems.
Our distributor told the supervisor that he needed an authentic True
Torque fluid coupling based upon the following facts:
Current Problems
As the shot deteriorates, running slip increases, causing excessive heat which welds the shot into chunks, causing severe vibration.
The severe vibrations cause the individual wire strands to stretch and break causing a major disruption in production.
As the load requirements change due to the gauge of wires being wound, the shot coupling often was over-sized, causing too-harsh of a start.
Wire strands broke and production was lost while the machines were rethreaded.
As the shot in the competitor's coupling deteriorates, the running slip will increase and the productivity of the cable winders will actually decrease.
The True Torque Solution
A True Torque fluid coupling's fill will never cause vibration, because
the fluid will always be distributed evenly through centrifugal force.
As the True Torque fluid coupling transmits torque through the fluid, even normal system vibration and running shock is reduced.
By "fine tuning" the True Torque fluid coupling, it can handle various load requirements and still provide soft starting capabilities without introducing vibration into the drive system.
The True Torque fluid coupling's running slip will not increase, thereby assuring consistent
high production rates.
Implementation
A Size 185HFN-41 was purchased and installed on one of the machines for testing. The results of the tests were excellent!
The winding machine handled all of the variable combinations of wire without stretch or breakage, and the vibration was gone.
In addition, the machine ran 10% faster than with the shot-type coupling due to the minimal slip of the
True Torque fluid coupling.
The customer is well pleased with the value of the True Torque fluid coupling and with his distributor's knowledge and service.
As a result, he ordered a total of 10 True Torque fluid couplings.
