Problem-Solver, Series 10

A copper mine located in Arizona had been using shot-filled couplings for soft-starting their belt conveyors.
The operators had to repeatedly jog the motors to start the fully loaded conveyors.
The resulting heat buildup would weld the shot to the internal surfaces of the coupling housings
causing a severe out-of-balance condition.
If the unbalanced shot coupling was allowed to run in this condition, the severe vibration would drastically affect the life of the
motor and the gear drive high speed shaft bearings. Years of frustration led to complacency on the part of the customer.
A problem which, over the years, became the standard operating procedure - rebuild the shot couplings every six months or risk serious bearing failures.
The Rexnord distributor explained that problems, which are lived with over long periods of time, have the tendency to take on
the characteristics of being normal and are easily overlooked in the day to day operations. The distributor salesman sat down with the customer
and further explained the situation as such:
Current Problems
Shot-type couplings will transmit inherent torsional vibrations to the driven equipment and offer poor overload protection.
Over-heating a shot-type coupling causes the shot to weld itself together causing damaging vibrations.
Jogging and/or excessive starting conditions leads to rapid deterioration of the shot charge and high maintenance costs.
The True Torque Solution
A coupling that transmits torque through a liquid will dampen
vibrations and will limit stall torque due to its unique baffling system.
An authentic fluid coupling when overheated, will automatically disconnect itself from the system.
Its fill will never cause an imbalanced condition.
True Torque fluid couplings are extremely reliable due to simple design with few wearing elements.
They are easily repairable, if required.
Implementation
The customer purchased eleven (11) True Torque fluid couplings for his belt conveyors, plus four spares. All the couplings sold were of the
belt and sheave design (-41), and used standard sheaves, taper bored for QD type bushings.
Once the True Torque fluid couplings were installed and had the fill quantities "fine tuned" for each conveyor, the customer found he no longer had to jog motors to start the fully loaded belt conveyors.
To date, all True Torque fluid couplings have been performing flawlessly and downtime on the belt conveyors has been reduced by 46%!
Let us show you how a fluid coupling can eliminate
your jogging requirements while promoting healthy drive components!
