Problem-Solver, Series 1
A large
Chicago area steel mill found itself at the mercy of the elements
and the operator of the bucket wheel excavator that feeds its blast
furnaces. Their friction type overload clutches simply could not
take the overloads caused by frozen stockpiles or the operators
biting off more than their machines could chew.
The overloads rapidly wore the clutch friction linings. The mill then found it necessary to lock
out the friction clutch to keep the machine operating. If another overload was encountered
while the clutch was disconnected, the result would be costly.
A Rexnord fluid coupling Distributor analyzed the situation this way:
Current Problems
The motor is capable of damaging drive components.
The load on the wheel changes with different materials and when materials are frozen. the same
is true if the operator overfeeds.
The existing slip clutch cannot be easily set for different torques.
Vibratory loads on the wheel, even under normal operation, causes machine fatigue.
Friction in the current clutch causes wear and eventual clutch replacement.
A holding brake is necessary.
The True Torque Solution
The
fluid coupling will limit transmitted torque to a safe level, regardless
of motor output.
The fluid coupling will adjust for these changes with a small change in the amount of slip.
Also, in the event of an extended overload, a fluid coupling thermal trip switch will warn the
operator.
The fluid coupling torque can be easily adjusted by changing the oil level.
A coupling that transmits power through a liquid will dampen vibration.
There is no friction in the power circuit of a fluid coupling, and therefore, no wear.
The fluid coupling can be easily supplied with a brake drum or disc.
Implementation
The Rexnord fluid coupling Distributor engineered a fluid coupling and
disc brake package to solve the user's problems. The Rexnord fluid coupling
package included a thermal trip plug plus a disc brake. For ease of
mounting and maintenance, the Rexnord fluid coupling and brake disc were
mounted between two coupling halves, much like a spacer coupling.
